I had my first nutrition cooking class today and i am so excited for next week already. My teacher, Marco (he correct us several times because we were not pronouncing it Italian enough), was awesome and is a professional chef. Today we made spaghetti from scratch, tomato and mushroom sauce, and a chocolate tart topped with strawberry mint sauce. Our class was in a kitchen with high stools two ovens and two stove for 8 of us to work in (most classes have 8-10 kids which is so nice for a change). Every week we will break up into 4 groups and make 4 different recipes. The end of class is the best part- we get to eat! Today's dishes were so good and making spaghetti without taking it out of a box was so exciting! I've always wanted to try it. It was so much fun cooking with such a talented chef and I cannot wait for next Monday. We are focusing on Italian appetizers next week.
How is this class called nutrition? Well the whole point of the class is to learn to cook with raw materials and healthier options, for example, in today's recipes we used all few vegatables, olive oil instead of butter, soft grain flour (its better than whole wheat), and brown sugar only (it has more fiber than white sugar). Within the first few minutes Marco said "you've all tasted good food but not necessarily food that is good" meaning, that food can taste delicious but food that can also taste delicious and be healthy for you at the same time.
Marco handed out a big packet of recipes that we are going to cover throughout the semester and I cannot wait to bring them home to 36 West Palisades Avenue! I have another cooking class called Current Trends in Italian Cuisine tomorrow morning..maybe I should just become a chef?
