Oktoberfest: Disneyworld for adults

OKTOBERFEST WAS AWESOME! First of all Munich is the cleanest city by far that I have ever been in. There was a man scraping gum off of the sidewalks. Anyways, we left at about 11:30 pm and drove straight through the night until we arrived at 8 am. When we got there we had time to change and get some breakfast (yes I ran to the Starbucks they had) and then we were off to the festival by 10am.

Basically everyone in the city begins drinking at the crack of dawn and is passed out by sunset. The man I met at Starbucks gave me a big hug and said "ah American girl welcome to Germany" and was smelling of beer at 9 am.  Everyone is super nice but im not sure if it was just because they were all drunk or were just really nice haha. I only had 2 beers a day because they were beyond huge and had a much higher alcohol content which we were warned of several times on the way to Munich. Some people stood up and got the entire tent (hundreds of people) cheering for them as they chugged. I do not know how these people were standing at the end of the day. Needless to say I was not one of those people haha. I took my time and still passed out in bed by 9 pm Friday and Saturday night.

So far in Europe I have had great experiences with hostels. It was me and one of my other roommates Jill and then we were put with what we thought would be 6 random people, but it turned out we luckily knew them from Florence. But when we got back from our first day at the festival we had a knock on our door. I opened the door assuming it was one of our roomies and this girl came running in and asked to use the bathroom, so of course I let her, being drunk and knowing how she felt haha. Anyways she then thanked me and told me someone had been using her bathroom and she didn't feel good and passed out on a bed next to me...yea.. I wasn't sure what to do with her. After we all took a nap and the girl who we decided to name "Randy" (random girl) woke up she asked where all her stuff was. The poor girl had no idea she wasn't in her room, had no shoes on, and no key to find her room. After going down to the desk with her and finding out she was our neighbor we became pretty good friends with her and learned that "Randy" had a real name and was actually from Florence also. Small world.

In addition to Randy we met several other interesting people. We hung out with a group of German guys all day Friday who were a ton of fun. And then on Saturday somehow met up with guys from Long Island who knew my friend Jacky. Again, small frigging world. What are the chances of meeting someone at Oktoberfest who lives a town over from one of my roommates?

Now lets discuss food in Germany. There is a lot of chicken, potatoes, sauerkraut, and sausages. There is also awesome bacon and cheese biscuits, Starbucks, and Burger King (yes i was drunk enough to eat fast food and am still grossed out about it). We also tried to get pizza (do not ask me why I have no idea) and after being in Florence for a month, Germany's idea of pizza was gross. The pretzels were stale and we didn't get it until we later realized that they were to dunk into the beer. I could not stomach trying one of those white sausage looking things (sorry Omi). But the beer was amazing I encourage everyone to try it once. So worth 10 Euro for a 1 liter stein.

Oktoberfest is not only a big beer fest but also a huge carnival. I'm so not a big ride person, and especially here. Some of these rides I have never ever seen before. They were crazy. But I did make it on the feris wheel and into the fun house which were both great. We rode the feris wheel with a group of about 10 Germans who were all wearing lederhosen! so great!

On Sunday we decided to go on the bike tour through Munich. Starting off the tour I was unsure how I was going to make it because I probably haven't ridden a bike since I was about 10 years old. But after a while it became a little easier. We went through a park with the Isar River which has extremely intense rapid that people surf on. In this park there was a nude section which was interesting to say the very least haha.We saw the government building which is constructed of mostly glass to symbolize a government with no secrets. We rubbed lions faces (only 3 for luck, 4 is unlucky). We walked on the golden path that locals who wanted to revolt against the Nazi's often walked on, until people began getting killed for doing so. As a sign of respect and to remember those who died their the bricks are now painted gold. We rode down the Maxamilieum avenue which is the most expensive shopping area in all of Europe. We also went to a beer garden to eat lunch where the man behind the counter was chopping roasted chickens in half pretty intensely.

On our way our tour guide told us it would be like Disneyworld for adults and it absolutely was. We had a great time, met some great people, saw some great views, and had some great beer! Prost! (this means cheers and was sung allll dayyyy longggg, along with New York, New York, Bevo Bevo an Italian song). We ended the trip by driving home through the Alps an sunset. It was so beautiful.

Yes Mom I survived cliff diving in Positano

It just keeps getting better! This weekend we spend three days tanning on the Amalfi Coast.  Thursday night we drove 7 hours to Sorrento where we stayed in a hostel which was nicer than some hotels i've seen in my lifetime.  It was a room with 4 bunk beds and felt like freshman year with communal showers and bathrooms but for 3 days it was a lot nicer than expected.  How can I complain when they gave us croissants every day for breakfast?

We headed to Capri Friday morning and spent the day on a boat tour around the town and let me tell you the water is definitely bluer than the Hudson.  We did the Blue Grotto which was awesome! Its an extremely tiny opening so you have to lay one your back in a tiny boat and get pulled by a chain into the cave, but once you are inside it is totally worth it.  The sun reflects through the tiny hole to the bottom of the cave and it is a brilliant blue. Once we were back on land we took a chair lift up to the tippy top of Mount Solaro (you rode by yourself and I was freaking out). We felt like we were absolutely on top of the world once we made it to the top. I've never seen such a view.

Saturday we spent the day in Positano tanning on the beach and soaking up the culture around us (men in tiny bathing suits included). In the afternoon we took a boat to some cliffs where we went cliff diving! Of course we had to scale the cliff before jumping in and I am not much of a height person, but our motto here is "no regrets"..so there was no chickening out of this one. Mom wasn't too happy about it but I lived to tell her about how awesome it was so no worries! (love ya Mom) We also went cave swimming which was pretty cool.  We had to swim pretty far from where the boat was allowed to go so it really tested my swimming skills, but I made it. Saturday night we headed out on the town in Positano and went to a bar which was in a cave called "Music on the Rocks".  Overall Saturday was a jam packed day but completely worth the lack of sleep.

Sunday we somehow managed to wake up without too bad of a hangover and headed to Pompeii for the day.  I've always wanted to see Pompeii and it was better than I expected it to be. I was under the impression Pompeii was a tiny village when in reality it was a huge city! It was so intriguing to walk the streets of the lost city and see actual bodies and buildings that were stopping in their tracks when Mount Vesuvius erupted.  It was a great weekend and so far my favorite place besides Florence in Europe.

Back in Florence it has finally cooled down a bit and I am actually sleeping at night now that I've learned to drown out the music and blaring ambulances (I learned there is one of the first hospitals ever in Florence right around the corner). Went into the baptistery of Florence today which is right next to the Duomo to look at it with my art class. Classes have been great and not too much work yet. Made spinach risotto, pumpkin risotto, and warm chocolate melting cake today in cooking. YUM!

We leave for Munich Germany Thursday! Can't wait to let you all know what the Oktoberfest experience will be like!!

Cinque Terre

Me and Corinn in Cinque Terre!
For a day trip with a travel group me and 4 of my friends went to Cinque Terre. It was a three hour train ride that was completely worth it. The towns are so pretty and the beaches are even prettier.  First we began the day with a short hike through the "love walk". It is named this due to the couples that have put locks of love all over the trail and inscribed their initials and love notes to one another along the rocks, plants, and walls.  After the first hike we had some lunch and I got pesto pizza! There was pesto sauce instead of tomato sauce and it was delicious. Once again, service was extremely slow. I'm still trying to get used to the slow pace of things here. I probably look like a crazy person speed walking to class everyday because no one else has any other speed besides slow in this city. Anyway after lunch there was an optional hike or ferry to the next town where the beach was. Well..me and my friends wanted to get the full Cinque Terre experience and not miss out on any views so we did the second hike and lets just say it would have been a funny sight to see. It was sooo much harder and steeper and took about and hour and a half. There sights were amazing but I was barely able to look because I was so afraid I would loose my footing.  The hike started with 360 stairs and just got worse from there. But once you start there is no turned back so we pressed on and eventually made it to the beach (thank god!!!). We spent the rest of our time on the beach tanning and swimming in the Mediterranean! It was awesome!
